Season Six, Episode Seven: ONCE MORE, WITH FEELING

[Copyrighted by Deborah Gill]
Random Comments:

"Musical? I've watched it over 15 times now. After the 10th SMG actually starts sounding good. Very scary. Spike surpassed my expectations (which, btw, is almost impossible to do. I have Sears Tower high expectations, and he went above and beyond. Wow.) Joss is a lyric god. And as much as I love Aly, she could have done with some singing lessons, lol. And did anybody know that Emma could sing?" -- Cyn

"Loved the musical. Pure genius. If I ever meet Joss I'm just going to kick him in the head because no one should be that brilliant. Rock on." -- Danielle

"OMG, Buffy was so good tonight!! I LMBO so many times.....and boy can Tara sing, Anya too! Buffy did better than I thought (though some of her R's bugged me, singing ah instead). Parts reminded me of Evita (just the style of songs). I was VERY impressed by it all......Thank you Joss!!!" -- AngelOHara

"Loved the musical. And except for the whole literally burning to death from all that energy part, that was my kind of demon. This ep is one of the reasons I love dance. Did u not see the emotions that were expressed thru dance? I love it, I love it, I love it! I especially loved the tappers" -- Jazzy

"Okay, this episode was amazing. Yes, i just watched it TWICE in a row without a break. that's gotta tell ya something. It was SOOOOO excellent!! i can't believe it!!!! AHHHHH" -- Jill

"I enjoyed this ep a lot, I even actually taped it, and was it just me or was anyone else having Rocky Horror Picture Show-esque flashes, Buffy singing was reminding me of a young Susan Sarandon in the floor show sequence." -- Lori

"Buffy's first number was definitely Disney-esque, but much of the rest of the show had aspects of both Rocky Horror and Phantom of the Paradise. In fact, I was thinking of the "There's a Light" song while Buffy was singing a few times. Oh, and by the way, this was quite possibly the greatest hour of television I have ever seen." -- Scott

"That was great...it was ingenious and just plain wonderful. My best friend is already making fun of me for loving Buffy and this episode, but I don't care cuz that was awesome. Willow's face when she found out that Buffy was in heaven was just...wow. And, hello, BUFFY KISSING SPIKE!!!! AAAHHHH...that was great...I can't believe it finally happened!!!!" -- Elena

"I'm sorry to say that because I was performing my civic duty, (voting) I missed the beginning of the ep, and really couldn't get into it. I did like James' song 'Let Me Rest in Peace' though. " -- Alex

"Oh, I want to sing and dance all the time. Someone cast a spell." --
Natalie

"I also really like Buffy's line, 'Dawn's in trouble, it must be Tuesday!'" --
Jan

"Yeah, it's kinda hard to rhyme stuff with Syphillis, dontchaknow." --
James

"I hate Anya. Anya needs to burn in one of my stinky loafers." --
Di

"Although...remember the kind of demon she was, destroying men who hurt women? I've often thought her male counterpart had to be out there, who destroys women for betraying men. So maybe there's more it than just breaking up Anya & Xander (I mean, did anyone really believe they'd get married? I think not.) Maybe her kissing Giles is gonna bring that demon to town, and then Anya's either gonna go boom! or go back to being the demon that she was. Either way, she'd go away." --
Skylar

"Wait, why? I actually really liked Anya last night. And if it's because of what's to happen last night I have five words for you dorks: GILES. ANYA. TERK TERK TERK." --
Randie

"GILES! ANYA! ICK! Well, yeah. I wasn't expecting it, but it doesnt seem strange, cause they work together. But okay, hello? Xander? Anya? Marriage? Thats what Anya was singing when she sang "I'll never tell". Dambit, she'll never tell she and Giles were having a passionate and very secret love hankering goin' on." --
Di

"I mean really, when was the last time someone laid a big wet one on Giles? (Smooching of tv sets does NOT count.) And you know it's true that Anya has mucho chemistry with him and nearly zero with Xander. So just relax, babycakes. It's all good." --
Skylar

"I'm sorry, did you say something? I'm a little busy here watching Anya dance around in her bra. I hereby conditionally renounce what I said earlier about dancing." --
James

"I really hope the writers pick up from the end of this episode (hehe..it was AWESOME) and run with it for a little while...but looking at tv-guide for next week it looks like potential trouble ahead." --
Rikki

"I actually kept singing 'Touch me' from RHPS, because its stuck in my head since halloween and Buffy did remind me of Janet." --
Angie

"Half the charm of Buffy's dancing is that she's a spaz. It's neato. I'd like it less if it was all... good and stuff." --
Randie

"And did anyone notice that thing she did with her hand when she was singing? Hehe. My boyfriend was like, "It's Christina Agalira!" I know I'm spelling her name wrong. Sorwee." --
Randie

"I think it was the hippy hippy shake pelvic thrusts he was doing. Cause, can we say, dayum. He was hot, for a green demon." --
Di

"I love James, but I was soooooo disappointed in his singing. I heard he was in a band, so I thought he would be able to carry a tune...but NOOOOOOOOO!!!!! Oh and as for the Giles and Anya hookup, I bet its a dream or something, but I would ship that...Love them both...big mourning for Giles leaving!!!!!" --
Ally

"Well, I'm looking at it this way. We could end up having one of the coolest, most complicated love triangles (Ack, not triangle. I mean octagon) ever. We've got Giles and Anya, Xander all heartbroken, Tara and Willow having problems, Spike and Buffy having... whatever the hell it is they're having. And somewhere along the lines, Buffy falls in love with Xander (It WILL happen, dammit) and makes for even MORE complication." --
Randie

"I love Amber Benson's singing but I fell like I'm trapped in Lilith Fair." --
Angie

"'I sprout beneath my Willow tree' ... then,.... Tara was complete.... ::traumatized::" --
Angie

[re: Not hearing Spike's accent when James was singing.] "I didn't hear one either but I remember thinking at the time that it's totally understandable cuz your voice can't do the same things singing as it does when you're talking because of the muscles and stuff that you use are different or more complicated or something like that." --
Skylar

"Joss is really pushing the envelope all over the place, isn't he? Pretty soon he'll only be able to air his shows after midnight on Fridays on Showtime. " --
Skylar

"More than any other actor on BtVS, Alyson is getting farked over by the lack of Emmy award respect towards BtVS. IMO. " --
Skylar

"Since when does Sunnydale have Fabio wannabes, especially ones that get tied to pillars waiting for damsels to come rescue them?" --
James

"Yeah, the "Oh, sh*%!" look is priceless if doen properly, like it was here. It shows us that Willow still has a shred of humanity left in her, at least for now anyway." --
James

Adam's Review:

Awesome episode. Loved the fact that they were so blase about this. I'd pick out everything I loved about this ep, but that'd take a while, so here's a few highlights:

1. This is why UPN rules. Do you think the WB would ever have allowed the scene I have affectionately dubbed "levitation and lesbian cunningulus" in a million years? Not to mention Xander's "tight" remarks in "I'll Never Tell" Offensive humor makes me laugh, every time.

2. "RIP" OMG, can we say "audio orgasm"? If anyone finds a site with mp3's or wav's of the songs, link me immediamente. I want to perform "RIP" at senior follies. in full spike regalia. RIP was my fave song, no question. tara has the best singing voice, anya had the funniest song sequences ("it must be BUNNIES!")

3. a few lines that rocked: "I gave birth to a pterodactyl" "I bet they're not even working." "I wondered why there was a hidden orchestra and the bellboys broke into choreographed dance sequences" "they got the mustard out!" "The police were still taking witness arias." "Dawn's in trouble, must be Tuesday" "do I have to...be your queen?" "we'll waive that clause, this time."

4. Spike/Buffy kiss. Woohoo

5. Willow got brought down off her pedastal, at LAST. (thankfully, after the aforementioned floating scene) Tara realized Willow is addicted to magic, and is going to dump her spellcasting arse like a bad habit next week. She realizes she did a truly bad thing by bringing Buffy back (let's see her brag to Giles now about how she's all that. Shows you, Miss Thang.) (Oh my god did I say Miss Thang?)

6. Who else thought those mask-wearing creeps who worked for Music Man would turn out to be the TT?? I swear, I did.

7. Anya in a bra. Be still, my beating hand. (I'm gonna get in trouble for that one)

And the promo for next week...

Giles and Anya...words fail me. Words fall WAY the frell short. The spirit is willing, but the words are weak.

Buffy on Spike in the cemetary, looking caught. Well yayness.

Willow saying she can go a week without doing magic. Sure, and I can go a week without self-gratification.

Giles is leaving buffy? ::cries::

Alia's Review:

I was with Scott on the first number being VERY Disney. Much of the rest of the show made me think of RHPS. And Into the Woods a bit.

This episode not only needs an Emmy it needs a Tony.

Amber and ASH singing together was so amazing I can't even describe it.

Anyone have the ability to make CDs from the TV? I would sell my soul for a CD of the songs.

Joss is God, what else can I say?

Little Willow's Review:

Everyone involved in Once More With Feeling - from Joss to Christophe, from Jesse to Marti, from every mainstay and guest star to each extra or backup dancer - is to be thanked and praised. A musical episode is a huge undertaking and it was pulled off brilliantly.

The hour was replete not just with songs but with emotion. It moved the stories, the people and the plots forward. As I guessed, it appears to be to Season Six as "Lovers Walk" was to Season Three - and that's a good thing. A very, very good thing.

I myself am an actress, dancer, singer and writer. I've directed my own work, dragged songs out of people, choreographed 20-somethings would who rather die than dance in public...Every bit of it was painful and trying. Every bit of it was bleeding and shouting. But in the end, time after time, every bit was worth it. Now, granted, I've never directed and written an episode for television which appears in X-thousand number of countries to Y-million people - but someday I will. Because shows like this aren't scared to put musicals on TV.

Shows like this aren't afraid to pave the way. Aren't afraid to do something unexpected. Aren't afraid to ignore the norm and follow the heart.

That's what this episode was all about. Not forcing an actor who sing who wanted to crawl and hide under the nearest tree. Not making everyone sound and look like a Broadway Star-to-Be. But to express what needed to be expressed...and expose what needed to be exposed. The secrets are out now; the lies, the betrayals. Much like I pay heavy attention to the writing in a regular episode - the dialogue, the snappy our-show-only lingo to which we've grown fond, grown accustomed - here, I listened closely to the lyrics. I wasn't expecting everyone to sound perfectly. I was watching their acting and listening to the words. Some folks I know who don't regularly watch the show but watched this episode have already spoken to me and told me who they think should have "shut his/her mouth" or "not give up his/her day job." But you know what? To each his or her own. If this were a full out, in-person, on-stage, theatre musical that I had attended, sure I would have thought not everyone should be a singer and sure I would have wished that the songs were longer. But in this format, I knew the songs would have to be shorter in some parts (and I loved that we did get longer tunes nonetheless). I also am so off-the-wall happy that the actors were going to sing - or talk - or dance - and not have doubles. Again, as a singer, I have issues about a person in the shadows being the voice and the lead person being the face...but I already expressed that last week. And again, yes, not everyone wanted to sing, but they did. They were brave enough to do it. What I say to the naysayers who are telling me so-and-so sang poorly is this: Were you up there, on that screen, bearing your heart for the world to see? Just standing up there on stage - or in this case, in front of a camera - takes guts.

As a singer, I thought Anthony shone, a star in the heavens. Amber was able to rock the house and I am so proud of her, I could burst! As a dancer and singer, I applauded Hinton's footwork and song stylings. As a songwriter, "I'll Never Tell" cracked me up and reminded me of my favorite comical tunes, while "Wish I Could Stay" broke my heart both as a writer and a fan. As an actress, I tuned in to the facial expressions - which could say just as much if not more than the lyrics at points - especially for Sarah, Amber, Anthony, Emma and Nicholas. As someone who has had her share of bit parts and asides, I cheered Marti 'til my throat was raw. I enjoyed that the episode touched fans on so many levels. Three cheers to the fans who have never really liked musicals but gave this one a try and kept an open mind. Thank you for that.

So we're back to that again. The world is a cycle. Their world. Our world. We have to tell the truth in order to move forward. Or, sometimes, we have to take a step back today in order to take two little steps forward tomorrow. We have to expose ourselves - our lies, our fears, our truths - because in order for others to believe in us, we have to believe in ourselves. First and foremost. Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom before you can come up to the surface again. Sometimes you have to be burned in order to shed your skin and evolve...into who you are. Into what's to come.

With an immediately-addicting hour packed with harmony, revelations and shakeups, this episode was rightly named: "Once More, With Feeling."

Natalie's Review:

First, it needs to be said that a person becomes ten times more attractive to me if they can sing and/or dance. Therefore I was just a big ball of hormones this episode, genders notwithstanding. Also, not everyone can sing and dance. It's a fact of life. If you bitch about anyone's voice, I'd A) tell you to do better, and B) give them more credit for doing it and not going to Joss with a request for their character to be on a ski trip that episode.

Credit sequence! How cute was that! And we're in letterbox format!

[shriek] Christophe Beck! He hasn't been around, has he?

I'm very impressed with Buffy. She can sing and fight. Not bad. And, the Dancing Demons! Hee!

"How can I repay-"
"Whatever."
Buffy, send him to me!!

"Respect the doughnut. Tame the doughnut." Sarah, I told you there was a doughnut theme.

Giles sang with an orchestra! I want to see Giles sing with an orchestra! Oh, this is so the Musical Comedy Version.

Anya, hate to break you Courtney Love spiel, but I don't think the bunnies did it.

UPN better get their act together. This is getting ridiculous the way they're messing with the tape. They mess up their commercials and damn them, they cut out during Spike's song! Bastards!

"It's do or die."
"Hey, I died twice." Heeee!!!

I want Giles to sing me to sleep. I'd have the best night.

"They got the mustard out!" Oh, my God, I want to see this whole number.

"I gave birth to a pteradactyl." Oh, I am using that line. Thank you, Dawn. And stop being a klepto.

"Oh my God! I'm cured! I want the boys!" Snerk. And I need to say that even with that prom-dressy looking dress and the zig zag part, Amber looked really cute, and shut up but I was drooling. She's got the best voice! She can sing me to sleep, too.

The Lesbian Love Ballad! Wth backup dancers! And oh my God, "spread underneath my Willow tree?", yes, they just ended that song the way I think they did...

Tap dancing vamp. Hee.

James and Randy, if either of you are still around, are you having fun seeing Anya in a bra?

Loved Xander and Anya dancing. Nick Brendon's face was just priceless. And, btw, "His penis got diseases from a Chumash tribe"? [snort]

"We could really raise the beam in making marriage a hell." [snerk]

If I ever get pulled over again, I'm gonna sing to get out of it. Unless they haul me into jail.

Dancing broomsweepers! Hee! Joss, I declare my love for you.

SPIKE! SPIKE! Spike's gonna sing!!!!!

"I really just said that, didn't I?" Yeah, I say that about every single day... Just jump him, Buffy. Live my dream.

James can sing. I love James. I must see him in concert, and hopefully I won't jump onstage to do bad things to him. Oh my GOD.

"I'm glad you guys made up." Ooh, Tara's gonna be pissed...

Dawn's got such a cute singing voice. It's kind of young and untrained, but she could be *really* good. And Michelle Trachtenberg's got dancing background, doesn't she? Anyone know? No one can move like that unless they've done it for a while. Like I credit SMG's ice skating with her dance moves.

I tell ya, the hormones. Even The Music Man is getting to me just because he's got that voice. Hell. I'm easy.

Giles and Tara singing together. Oh, I'm a spazzy mess.

"I'm free if that bitch dies, better help her out." [snerk!!!]

Giles. Hee. "She needs backup. Anya. Tara."

I still like Willow, I do. But I have to admit that I emitted a loud "HA!" when she found out Buffy was in heaven. Although then Alyson ripped me to shreds with her expression.

Spike saved Buffy from spontaneous combustion! Wheeee!!! [rereads] Well, that was an odd sentence.

[everyone looks to Willow, thinking she conjured the Music Man]
[Xander raises his hand]
[Natalie giggles herself into a fit]

"Does this mean I have to be your queen?" I wanna see *that* song!

"Heh. Bugger this." Spike, let me do naughty things to you. Please.

And tah dah, the best ending to any episode of anything in the history of the world!!!! =)

[going to listen to Spike and swear at UPN some more]

Randie's Review:

Giles is just so... so. I love his voice. I love him. And I thought Buffy had a really pretty voice. The best song was the walking through fire song. I've had that stuck in my head all day. And it was funny how Spike and Giles and Tara and Buffy were mostly singing and I went, "Hey, where's Willow?" and then suddenly, she's like, "I think this line's mostly filler," and it was so funny I started hurting myself without realizing.

James has a really great voice, but I was having trouble with his song scene because of the way he was lip-synching, it didn't flow right. But the song was great. I even kinda liked the song Tara sang to Willow. Amber has a really pretty voice, but the song was reminding me of the emo crap my friends listen to and I make fun of them for. But otherwise it was good. And, ack, that was kinda weird, what with Willow disappearing out of frame and Tara looking all... um, blissful and floating. I was watching that in the living room and my Mom was like, "Are they lesbians?!" "Uh, yeah." "No, really? Are they?" "Yes!" "Seriously, Randie?" "YES!" And this is why I usually watch Buffy in my room, so that's what I did as soon as a commercial came on. My mom kept shaking her head and going, "So weird."

Anya and Xander's song was great. Anya is so funny I can't stand it. The bunnies! I nearly had three cows when she sang that. "I'll Never Tell" was great. But Anya is NOT the cutest of the Scoobies, that's still Buffy, especially when she's dancing around like a madwoman. That was very cute.

Marti Noxon might as well walk around with a cat on her head because she is one cool cat.

Let's see... I'm trying to get through all the songs, but I'm doing it in a weird order. I liked that one song they sang in the Magic Box that started with the theory stuff and ended with "why should we care" or whatever. I kept having "I Want to Hug..." spazzams. First I wanted to hug Giles, then Xander, then Buffy... so I hugged my sister instead. (She was a little freaked out)

So... the ending was great. I'm with you on the hormones thing, Nat. That musical demon guy was great. His voice was just... he had one of THOSE voices. And I kept going, "Ah, he's so sexy," and my sister was all, "He's a demon." Well, yeah, but did you hear his voice? I liked that song he sang to Dawn, and his dancing. And then at the very end when he said he'd see them in Hell, I was like Ok!

Then I had another Hug Spazzam when Buffy told them she had been in Heaven and then she was like, "So give me something to sing about." Yeah. She's very cute when she's dancing! I'm sorry! I can't control how much I think that. And I loved the part when Spike stopped her from, you know, combusting and every time he sang, "living."

I'm really upset that the "Where do we go from here" song was cut short because I really, really like that one. Giles with his oh so sexy "Tell me!" Aw s'it. When I accidentally read that Buffy and Spike would be kissing, I was all cranky and upset because I HATE Buffy/Spike (Actually, I don't. I just hate their fans. And that excludes you guys, since I know there's a lot of you here) But it wasn't so bad. I didn't hate it. I'll... I'll get used to it.

And next week! Giles and Anya! GOOD LORD! I swear, there's about six Giles/Anya shippers in this world and I'M one of them. So my theory is that Joss KNEW (even though he doesn't know me) that I hate Buffy/Spike and KNEW that I love Giles/Anya and he said to himself, "Joss, we can't lose that Randie as a fan. She's such a good fan and she's so nice and she looks really pretty in blue. So to soften the blow of Buffy and Spike kissing and Xander and Anya marrying, we'll give her some Giles and Anya kissage. Yes, we will." I screamed when I saw that. No, I seriously started yelling and jumping up and down on my bed and my mom came in and started yelling at me. Totally ruined the moment. Alright.

Rikki's Review:

Ok, I watched this episode with the mind set that this would be a little side show compared to usual episodes...and in that mind set I give this episode a 4 out of 4. It was awesome. Ok, I admit it. I tend to be Joss' plot line man wh*re. I tend to agree with all the plot lines. I'm easy like that. Although I'd fall on the Buffy/Angel shipper side, I don't mind plot lines involving the pairing of different couples throughout the course of the show.

But at the end of this episode, when SPIKE AND BUFFY WERE KISSING I WAS FREAKING CHEERING! And I don't mean kissing cause they were in a dream sequence! That was the closing shot. I know, here it comes. The Spike and Buffy should NEVER get together argument. Well, Joss pulls everything (::inserting plot line man-wh*re praise here::) off quite nicely, so why not a stroll down Buffy and Spike lane. If only for a little while. Plus Spike doesn't have a soul to lose. Ok...rambled enough. I'm going to watch this episode again now.

Stephanie's Review:

I just wanna say that I am in love with this episode...is it possible to be in love with an episode? Hmmm...well, anyways! (I swear im not crazy...).

-I love James, Ash, and Ambers voices!

-Whats up with Willow hardly singing?

-I really love this whole thing where Buffy and Spike are the only ones who can make each other feel again

- Giles' song was sad! I need a father figure like that...he's all self-sacrificial....cause he loves her. Aww.

-My virgin ears and eyes have been forever scarred by Tara and Willows song and the "spreading under the willow tree". Thanks Joss. It was lovely to watch with my grandma in the room, really...(notice my sarcasm)

-How bout that ugly demon guy, he had a mad sexy voice.

-Dawns voice is cute, it's so little girlish

-I get to stay home alone and im 14, a year younger than Dawn. I'd hate to be her.

-I've watched this far too many times...

-Are my jumbled thoughts making any sense at all?

-I LOVED Spikes song. It was serious.

-Buffy and him kissed and they werent under a spell or trying to prove something and YAY!!!! Sorry, im just a little overly happy is all.

*Previews for next week*
-Yea right...Willow is doing so well with her 'no spells' promise...Shes making me mad.

-Buffy needs to stop running away from things. She better not say her kiss with Spike meant nothing.

-Anya and Giles...OMG! Maybe its all a dream....

Steve's Review:

Wow! I had high expectations, but they were exceeded! Who ever it was on one of these lists that said this would be where "Buffy" jumped the shark couldn't have been more wrong. I hope you are eating plenty crow who ever you are.

Who would have thought Joss could write songs like that? Joss rules! First of all the grave yard scene was great. If anything there should have been more vamps and demons dancing in the background to make it more like an old Hollywood musical.

I loved Anya's "Bunnies" song. I was hoping for a fantasy scene where she danced with some big rabbits.

Her "I'll Never Tell" dance scene with Xander was one for the ages. I don't believe the bra and lacy bottom they put her in. Yowza! And this comes right after her Farrah Fawcett outfit last week! Who would have thought she could sing so well either? Emma can act, tell jokes, sing, dance and pose in "FHM." Is there anything she can't do? (OK, don't anyone say, "you.")

I was also in a state of disbelief when Tara levitated right off the bed. This show is getting a little adult. Still it is a long way from soft core porn which some prudes out there suggest. If you think that is soft core you should check out some hardcore at your local video shop. (Alyson Hannigan once worked as a clerk at a porno video store.)

Both ASH and Amber have excellent voices. Even if some members of the cast sound like regular folk at Kareoke night that's OK. In "The Bitter Suite" on "Xena" Reneee O'Conner's voice was so obviously dubbed it sounded totally cheezy.

I'm glad Dawn told Tara about the fight. Willow is definitely out of control. She needs a visit from Stuart Smalley.

The Buffy/Spike romance has been hinted at for over a year. Nonetheless the ending was a shock. I hope Joss didn't do it just so he could end his musical the way all old Hollywood musicals end. "Where Do We Go From Here?" indeed!

Still, nothing in all of Whedondom has ever put my jaw on the floor like the scene from next week. It has to be a spell. Otherwise Joss would never do something like that with out plenty of foreshadowing.
